Warrant: The Rapture

This time of morning always brings me peace. It is calm. Quiet. And the break of the new day shows promise. I wonder if today will be the day that I actually find happiness. Oh wait. I am already dead. Damn. Well, no matter. I will sit by the willow tree until dusk and sing my lullaby to the heavens.
I know that out there some where, there is a listening ear. I will continue to sing aloud until the voice of reincarnation calls me home.

Warrant: The Rapture
DeMaster A. Thomas
#2132001
I warrant the rapture, I call on her mystery.
I summon the rapture, I call on her love to come and take me home.

I call on your darkness, I call on your history.
You found out my secrets and you have discovered me.

I lost you, but you looked for me.
I couldn't breathe and I couldn't sleep.
You gave me a chance to be free.
I need you to come back and lead the way to fantasy.

I warrant your rapture, I call on your mystery.
I summon your power, I call on your love for me.

I walk on your darkness, your power is life to me.
You give me a reason to want to love: so come take me home.
Hold on. Come and take me home.

You took on my sins and washed away these lies of me.
You found out I'm senseless, but didn't find the shame in me.

You held on when no one else could hold.
You find life in the deepest cold.

You gave me a reason to be free you gave me a reason to love me
And now...

I warrant your rapture, I call on your mystery.
I summon your power, I call on your love for me.
I walk on your darkness, your power is life to me.
You give me a reason to want to love so come me home.
Hold on. Come and take me home.

The time has come. Your journey here is complete.
Wake up.
And so I did. I woke up. All my life, I lived in a dream: the dream of success, romance, material wealth, lust, power, wrath, change, passion, utopia...

This constant state of blissful euphoria fed my imagination until the heart grew cold like a distant fog of faint memories. All of the things I loved before, became nothing. And all of the love I thought I wanted, became lust. It was time for change. I woke up.

It did not matter anymore how vanity's amendment governed my senses. My eyes were open to the truth. The truth is, we are all beautiful because we are made in the image of our one true Creator. Vanity believes we must all fit one size, style, fashion, color and image. Love believes we are without physical sight and therefore, vanity has no place in its heart. I woke up.
It did not matter anymore; thirsts of the flesh as her powerful ambiance lured me into the deepest, warmest pleasures of her womb. Love said, "when two or more are gathered in My Name, I Am-there." This sensational union of mind, body and spirit-creates life. This is the greatest human power of all -- first, the ability to take life away. Indeed we are made in the image of our creator(s). We have the power to see, believe and achieve. We have the power to give life as well as take it away. I woke up.

It did not matter anymore, how many toys I had in my toy box. Gluttony, envy and jealousy were no longer my closest circle of friends. I spent many a night and weekend with them. Understanding, compassion and sensibility greeted me with open arms and warm invites to their cabin in the mountains in winter and their crisp, cool lake homes in the summer. There was never a want; let alone a need, that was not satisfied without asking. Every time I walked through the door of old familiar faces greeted by sincere smiles and open hearts, their eyes always said to me, welcome home. I woke up.

For those who attempt to break the unbreakable, why not attempt to achieve the unthinkable. For those who attempt to destroy the everlasting, why not take time to absorb the simplicity of right now. Now is the time.

I have journeyed the halls of dreams that live beyond a lifetime. I have seen the past, present and the future of mankind. It is finished. "We are all dead. And this-is hell." I now understand we must die in order to live. We must suffer in order to gain and we must realize our hate in order to fully embrace love. Now is the time.

What are your dreams telling you? Are you walking in darkness or are you open to the light? Are you carrying pain from the past? Are your present experiences making it hard to go on and possibly causing you to feel like there is no future? Then, now is the time. Wake up.

Do you blame others for the trouble in your life? Do you curse the heavens and earth for human suffering and natural disasters? Do you blame God for the way your life turned out? Then, now is the time. Wake up.
Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? Are you tired of fear, destruction, tears of war, famine, injustice, prejudice, segregation, secret society, dividing of peoples, raping of nations, corrupt governments, broken hearts, blistered fists, disintegrated spirits and dying powers of will? Then, now is the time. Wake up.

It does not over 18,000 different religions to change the world, it only takes one to start. How much more can we take? How much longer do we have before it is too late to make that universal change? Now is the time. Wake up.

STOP. PLEASE. STOP. EVERYONE. ALL AT ONCE. BE. STILL.

Take a moment to look around you. Realize where you are; mentally, physically and emotionally and ask yourself: is this what I want for myself and those I love? If it is not, then-now is the time to change it.

We do not have to separate ourselves from each other based on creed, color or class. We can choose not to steal, kill and destroy each other. WE HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE AS INDIVIDUALS which leads to change as a whole.

The world was designed for the toughest race of all; the human race. There is no such thing as a superior nationality. This is an illusion. We have the ability to balance all differences: economics, healthcare, politics and religion. We must choose this change collectively and live one through the other without greed, lust, power, wrath, envy and hate. We must change at the very core of our being. We have the ability to let these detriments go-we have the power to choose. Stop. Think. Change. Now is the time.

What are your dreams telling you? What is your true reality? What is your core desire? Is it detriment or supplement? Do you want to change? Do you need to change? Find your place in the cycle of life and fulfill your purpose. You are here for a reason. Find The Source in you and listen to the message.
Shalom.

Suicide: Death In A Dream

"Oh look...ah, here we go. He left a note at least."
"Good grief, the body stinks!"
"Have the crew come up and clean this up, will ya?"

"You done here, Detective?"
"Yeah, for now. Let's see here...they say dead people don't talk. But this guy's got a lot to say..."

Date of death: March 6, 2004

There he was. He was in the doll's house. Dancing side to side, shuffling his feet and waving his arms and hands. Her hair was frizzy, dirty blonde, torn, and stringy. Her skin was a cold, broken plastic-stiff with age and bitter with despair. His clothes were worn and thin. Exposing the gritty aftertaste of his sorrows dried over crusted wounds. The eyes were stuck open with injurious stare-glazed by depression and dilated with lost passion. Nylon thread forced eyebrows into a shape of anger and surprise.

Without warning, I walked into the dollhouse to the second floor--center bedroom. The room was gray and cold with only the light from the broken ceiling fan above. It was a thick distance between us. My large nature against the small-framed doll gave me a sense of godliness and therefore, encouraged my control. He stopped dancing side to side in a panic and without shifting expression in his cutting eyes, opened his rotted mouth wide with a maniacal grin. Nothing could stop the radiating hate from shooting through me from her soul. I pushed with all I could muster in my sub-conscious state and forced movement of my body toward him. With ever-changing motion, fast to slow, I raised my
arms, torn and bleeding from blades of years repressed. He screamed and tried to fight me from taking hold of the stiff, plastic arms. The stream of his voice screamed over me as I continued to struggle for control. I managed to take hold of him and move him from the upstairs center room to the far right living room where the fireplace burned brightly.
We argued with our emotions and wrestled with our fears. Hate and tears kept score and refereed the fights. I managed to win him over but her taste, I could not swallow. The halls of self-love were cold and damp and the bell tower of human dignity was hollow. I forced him into a vicious shift in environment from nowhere to worse-a rusty, mustard-yellow, button padded room, no light, no windows, no doors. He struggled and fought to break free from my grasp and shouted obscenities of truth. Each word blocked a major artery to my heart and slowly choked me still. He begged and begged
and the louder he became, the softer his words fell into the air. I paused before fading into the darkness because out of the senseless shouting, I heard reason. I asked her, what do you want from me? She simply dropped her arms, lowered his head, closed her eyes, cried and said, "free me. Please. Set me free."

The Principles of Lust

Ah, Enigma. Play on, play on...such sweet melodies to take you away...
"...do it until you find: love..." There's a concept. Why does the flesh consume us so? What makes the physical appearance so irresistible? So many people get married for the wrong reasons. So many people get married based on looks alone, forgetting that one day, they won't look that good anymore. But we marry in the flesh and fornicate in the soul...what a delightful delicatessen of destruction that is.
Understand that it is only man's desires to please the flesh. It is my desire to please your soul. I have designed love making to be an art. Not a recreation. Please know that when you enter into a relationship with your husband or wife, that it will be for the purpose of fulfillment, not temporary enjoyment. Love making is just as much an emotional thing as it is a physical thing. It is simply a form of communicating what you feel, in order to be fruitful and multiply. So this is what you do.

Do not enter into a marriage with any doubts, ideas or expectations. These are all driven by the world of flesh and are not of the spirit. When you enter into love making, start out traditionally as it is intended. The other recreation will come later. The traditional art of lovemaking should be treated as if it were brand new to you and your body. It is the first time for you and your spouse. You are to enter into the art like that of a virgin. Forget what you know and forget what you have felt. This will be completely different from anything you know. This will be found as a rejuvenating profound experience in spiritual love, not physical lust. You will be pleased beyond measure.

This is the way it is designed. Please judge not your actions, but your heart. Understand where you are in love and spirit. Not in flesh. And all will come to you in this art. - GOD

Rapture or Abduction

Rapture or Abduction

"Are you crying?" She said.
"Of course not, I just have something in my eye." He answered.
"Oh please you actually cried at a movie-I can't believe it!" She joked.
"I don't know what you"re talking about." He grunted.
"Oh just admit it, you liked the movie. My man has a soft spot after all." She smiled.
"It was okay." He paused, "oh well alright if you insist. I'll say it. Yes, I liked it." He smiled.
"I knew it!" She replied happily. And with a loud thud outside their bedroom window and a shattering crash causing the lights and television to blow out, they jumped into each others' arms and quickly held onto each other in excitement; wondering what was happening!

The room became cold and dark. The walls started to sweat and without warning,
a bright soft glow appeared and walked toward them. The glow spoke in a calm deep tone, "be not afraid. I am a blessing from the One of Superior Knowledge and I have come for you."
The man rushed quickly to the bed as the ghostly figure grazed his arm. They were so stricken with fear, neither could speak. They could only sit at the edge of the bed, frozen with glazed stares. Once they were still, the spirit continued to speak. "You will not be harmed while in spirit. You will be placed into a deep sleep and when you awaken, you will possess a mind of higher elevation, knowledge and understanding."

The wife gulped and whispered in disgust, "are we being abducted?"
The husband quickly snapped out of it and sharply replied, "that ain't no alien; that's a ghost!"
The spirit was not amused by their quirky utterances and continued to speak in the same tone.

"Sleep. Now."  And in the blink of an eye, the couple's bodies both fell back on the bed into a deep sleep. The room began to stretch and pulsate with each breath. "Now, allow the power of the Word to come alive in you at this very moment. When hear my voice say, Godspeed, you will instantly be projected into another dimension of consciousness. Your physical body will remain, but your soul will be guided by the Spirit."

Their bodies were both stripped naked and placed in separate tubes. All of a sudden, the room filled with an intense light. The bodies began to transform into pure energy. All the while, the eery figure continued to speak softly over them. "You are beautiful," it said to the woman. "You are victorious over all enemies," it whispered to the man. And then a deep voice chimed in. "Embrace the broken spirit of the Fallen before you. Heed my word. The sound of my voice is comfort to you. You are fulfilled. Sew. Reap. Serve. Plant. Seed. The voice of Knowledge will water you in love and healing. You will be ambassadors. You have been chosen."

After the transformation was complete, their bodies were joined together and made one. They became one root-one breath-one life.

"Elevate. Your soul will not be returned to this body. You are Spirit."
The souls of the couple were quickly vacuumed into a much larger tube of clear glass, hovering above their house. As the visual expanded, you could see endless counts of similar glass cylinders with bright strings of fluorescent lights, being extracted from the land surface into the darkness of the midnight sky. It was a majestic sight. Above the dancing tubes of light and even higher above the great blanket of black sky, was another large floating object, square in shape, glowing like liquid gold.
Another combination of male and female type voices chanted in unison: "You are being made new. You will be refreshed. Rejuvenated and made strong through your Christ's Love. Your Messiah has extended His Love to you. You are blessed. Be not afraid. You will feel no pain-only pure emotion."

The massive craft was 1500 miles high, 1500 miles wide and 1500 miles deep. Inside the great airship were many rooms. Each room had an inscription on the upper left crust of the viewing glass. There were no doors to the rooms. The inscriptions were symbols of some kind, not common words that one would easily recognize. There were no lights in the corridors, but the entire area was illuminated. In between each floor of the traveler, there were long halls with 360 degree monitors. The husband spirit projected a thought into the wife spirit and said, "these look like waiting rooms." The wife spirit replied with a warm loving tone and said, "Yes. The rapture has begun."

The Map To Heaven

For a long time, we have had visions of escaping our beautiful blue star ship and getting out of our luxurious fish tank in the sky to the unimaginable limits beyond. This passion for such a journey led me to research our galaxy, its place in all of creation and go even further into the depths of darkness. The goal was to determine if indeed there was a Heaven and if so, where is it? Well after exhaustive study and countless hours of going backward, second guessing myself to assure some shred of accuracy, I finally found it!  While I was not able to determine what is beyond the passages of the many galaxies that surrounds Heaven, I was at least able to create a map of how to get there. Here is a rendition (obviously not to scale) with a brief description of where Heaven is and how to get there from Earth.

The Map To Heaven

Now folks, if you're anything like me, when I found out just how "fa-ha-ha-ar" this was, I was a little disgusted, because I'm thinking to myself, hey look! We can just hop in the old USS Star Ship Enterprise ('mind you secret projects all over the world are working to build one in real life-don't think they're not and with your tax dollars by the way) and just hop on over to Heaven just in time for dinner! Um, no. After putting this entire scope of everything into perspective, I was brought back to reality and quickly reminded, I'm good with the way things are. I can always just say a prayer, wish upon a star or just stare off in the sky at night and say...yep; nice. Good enough. Let's go. And leave it that. Because let me tell you this! Not only is the Celestial Gathering of Universal Galaxies, called the "T.I.A.M.A.I.T." (I'll explain more about that later in the site, don't worry), so unbelievably freakishly far away, but it's so indescribably BIG that you can't tell where Heaven begins or ends! But I'm going to do the best I can to describe it to you.

Imagine for a moment that you are standing in the center of your room where you are now and there is a blue golf-ball equally positioned on the other side of the planet from exactly where you're standing. Well that's about how far away Earth is from Heaven. And then remember, you're a full sized human being comparing your size to that of a golf-ball, well that's about how big Heaven is to us. Let's turn to the M2H Map below for a clear explanation.

Star Point 1. You recognize that right? That's right. It's the Milky Way, home of our Solar System, home of Planet Earth. So get in the Star Ship and let's go for a ride. Now this is the easy part. We are going to exit the Milky Way heading North by Northwest, keep straight until you're just outside The Spirals and make a left. Then keep going straight for about...get ready for this...22 billion light years. That's right. I said it. 22! Hope you packed extra undies, because there's no way in hell I'm turning back.

Star Point 2. Coming up, you will see a Super Nebula, you will want to make a right just past the Super Nebula and keep straight for another 22 billion light years. I know, ridiculous right?
Well, I warned you it was far.

(are we there yet? not even close...)

Star Point 3. Hey the scenery at least changed a bit. This time, we're
looking for the Cat's Eye Nebula, just off to the left of the Star Ship.
Pretty eerie to look at it just staring back at you all cold and dark and
spooky. So let's just keep going. This time, we only have to make a
slight left and keep going for about 19 billion light years and we're in the
home stretch! Ah, you can do it. We've come this far right! Let's go.

(are we there yet? almost...)

Star Point 4. Now things are starting to look brighter. We are
almost there. Take a look out of the right of the Star Ship and you
will see-you guessed it-a very unnecessarily large, bright
Cat's Eye Nebula, that looks right at you and says in a warm
pleasant voice, "welcome to the outer rim of the universe."
I'm feeling better about this trip already. And to think you wanted to
turn around and go home. No way! It's only 3.5 billion light years
due North to get to the Gate and we're Heaven bound!

(are we....No! good grief...)

Star Point 5. (ding-ding)  Ladies and gentlemen from the
flight deck, this is your Captain speaking.
We have just entered into the outer rim entrance to the Celestial
Gathering of Universal Galaxies, known as T.I.A.M.A.I.T.
to the locals. In the center is a galaxy approximately 10,000 times
the size of the Milky Way, with 7 suns surrounding a teal blue-green
planet about 10,000 times the size of Earth. Outward from there are
12 perfectly placed galaxies, each specific to their own. This is the
home of all Creation known and unknown; seen and unseen; only a short
122 billion light years from Earth. Enjoy your stay here in eternal
paradise or wherever your final destination may be.

(are we...Oh yeah, we're here :)

And for the first time, in a long time, we will have time--on our side. We will be one with ''all that is'' and ''all that is'' will be one with us

The Poetry Corner

Dreams transcend space and time.
In our dreams, we leave the body and explore the mind.
We go where the imagination takes us.
This is the poetry corner.

Phone Call To God
by: Fiji, 12 yrs old

Hello God, I called tonight to talk a while.
I need a friend once again who’ll listen to my trials.

You see, I can’t seem to make it through one day on my own.
I need your love to guide me so I’ll never feel alone.

I want to ask you please to keep my family safe and sound.
Come in and fill their lives for whatever fate they’re bound.

Give me faith dear God to face each hour throughout the day.
And not to worry over things I can’t change anyway.

I thank you God for always taking my calls.
I thank you for giving me advice and catching me when I fall.
Your number, God, is the only one that answers every time.
I never get a busy signal and never had to pay a dime.

So thanks God again for easing my sorrow.
Good night, I love you, too. And I'll talk to you tomorrow :-)

I know. Twelve years old and she could write like that. I was impressed. It was amazing. She said she wrote this poem while watching the sunset out her window after dinner one evening. She pictured her father's face and her mother's tears and it made a lump in her heart. With every line, there was stillness and then with every breath of God's name, there was a soft crash against the rocks from the ocean. It was as if she was speaking to the ocean and the ocean responded with subtle joy.

A young man in his late 20's, serving a 20 to life sentence in a Southwestern prison, wrote this poem for me to take back and share with my readers. I remember how his face and mannerisms expressed his pain. He was deeply hurt, incredibly disturbed, but quite articulate and passionate about his faith. We talked briefly about his rhymes. He was going to be a rapper before he got locked up. He said his raps spoke his true language: love. This was the last rhyme he wrote before he committed suicide in his cell.

I'm Free
by: E.M.D., 5/24/03

The memories I paint ain't picture perfect.
I'm holding on but it's not enough to even scratch the surface.

The mind is troubled but I'm seeing double in my spirit.
Can't wake the evil deep inside because I fear it.

It's the penitentiary my soul is screaming freedom.
They give me books to read for free but I don't need them.

I'd rather lie awake at night and bang my head through the wall.
Wishing hoping praying that anybody would call.

I'm writing letters for the pleasure of watching the pen.
Release the pressure of the fact that I'm dying in sin.

Will I ever see my mama 'nem laughin' again?
Will I ever be the shoulder for the pain of my friends?

And will I ever feel the love of a woman again?
Or will I die leaving behind this depression I'm in.…

It ain't worth it asking questions, I already know.
The only way to truly be free is dying on the row.

I'm tired of people telling me that it's all gon' change….
I know this but until then I'm drowning in rain.

Everyday I'm looking for a way to hide from the shame.
I'm getting older and I'm running out of people to blame.

No one left to talk to so I cry to Jesus.
Please help me out this hole of hell I'm digging it deeper.

Every time I try to pay you back I'm making it worse.
Don't need a reason-I understand that you loved me first.

The voice is getting louder the closer I get.
To the hour I'm relieved from the hate and regret.

Arms and legs shackled-plate strapped to my head.
Thought I would die crying but I'm smiling instead.

I was burdened by my destiny and laws of the state.
But now I'm breathing with a reason as I pass through the gates.

Rest in Paradise, E.M.D. Here's your song:

The next piece is not a poem. It is an excerpt from a conversation I had with a bartender in Indiana. We talked over dinner and drinks at MacNiven's Restaurant and Bar. I will never forget him because he was the funniest looking little man with a crooked smile, a wise mind and a heck of an eye for politics. We were talking about how some people wanted to take "one nation under god" out of the Pledge. I asked him what his thoughts were on the matter and I could not agree more.
***
"As a citizen and a Christian I am extremely concerned with the views our political leaders have regarding the bible’s definition of government. It is imperative that today’s heads of government realize that every move they make must be in accordance to the will of the Highest Law. Our country was founded on these laws but unfortunately fell away from their true meaning and creed of "one nation under God." According to the Bible, those of leadership positions or heads of government must recognize the original position of its council and departments. They are there to serve, honor, protect, and provide for the nation in which they govern. It is not the intent of the governmental head to provoke war, ignore famine and poverty and operate a country without the guidance of Divine Law. This country could be easily cured of ninety percent of its problems simply by turning to the Bible for answers. It is the duty of the political leaders to obey God's will in ruling and acting as head of counsel but if the political leaders refuse to acknowledge, learn, read, study and fully accept and enforce the teachings and commandments of the Divine Law, the head and body of government and society will surely fail in its efforts to survive and will eventually die completely. Our society will fall ruin to operation and ruling without God's Law as the center focus and purpose of structure and the world in whole will continue to create more and more ways to destroy itself until one day it's too late. This is why I feel that our political leaders should return to the origin of governmental structure and find out what it truly means to be a leader of nations. The answer to all of their problems is in the top drawer of every hotel in America."
Top drawer of every hotel in America, eh? That phrase sounded familiar. Oh yes. It was mine.

Being that I'm left-handed, yes a southpaw, I couldn't help but laugh a little on this next poem. But it was a very serious poem and held sentiment for the author, (who just happened to be right-handed.)

Left- Handed Curse

I can see the chewed brass knob,
Mangled from something that clawed
To get down there.
My fingers reach to open the door,
Shaking hands with it.
I would pray that the beasts behind it might go away.
I used to make my mom sit at the top of the stairs
And talk to me, while I crept down to get a load of hot laundry
Or check the wood stove.
I knew that if I heard her voice, I was still alive.
Once I heard the charred wood settle into itself
And the painful groan of the dryer,
I knew something was down there,
Remembered where I was, bolted up the stairs
Three at a time, making sure the hands couldn't get me.
Two stairs from the top, I took a quick glance behind me,
Expected to see a foaming beast, inches from my ankles.
But instead there was nothing but a cascade of brown carpet
And ahead of me stood Mom, hands on hips,
Shaking her head, not understanding my fear.
I had escaped once again from my imagination's grip.

This next poem was written by a woman near and dear to my heart. She was a middle school teacher from Wisconsin. Her words were as strong as her love and it showed. Let me share one of the poems she shared with me. I was moved by her conviction. There is a place for you in peace.

Rapture, (A.E.M. 83199)
He will come
The thief in the night
The Son of Man
Clothed in power and glory
Hair of lamb's wool
White and blameless
They will be gone,
The stoned and the mocked
The jailed, abandoned who walked
To become fishers of men
From the lips of which flowed honey
Saved from God's wrath
And you whisper
Wiping it from the mind
Will He come for you
Lost and dancing with the world?
Narrow is the Path
Wide is the gate to death
Open are the arms of Perfection
Nailed to a cross
Bleeding and crushed
God's anger poured out
On His only Son
Broken for you.

Of course I have to wonder at times if my own notes are worthy of poetic justice, but I know it is not the poetry in motion that sets the mood for the content, it is the message. So here is a little blurb of my own that I shared with the National Science Foundation at a seminar in 2004.
***
"Since the dawn of man and technology the question has been asked, is science and religion the same or different? Experts in both fields offer many opinions and theories, but have never truly reached an agreement on an explanation of the relationship between the two. Taking a fresh approach to the debate over science vs. religion requires removing oneself from either bias. Let us take a moment to consider this. If indeed religion is simply a study of beliefs, it in fact, really has nothing to do with one's faith in a particular deity."

"In all actuality, religion has very little to do with God or the Bible or any other doctrine for that matter. Religion is simply something one does in a repeated, habitual manner. We associate faith with religion because of historical connotations. Faith is used in Scripture so often to support and describe belief in a Divine Deity, that we naturally associate one with the other. When in reality, there is no physical evidence, only a hypothesis or idea that the end result will eventually come to pass. Doctrines of all have considered a basis of faith because the deity in which they truly seek and the works thereof are the end result-yet to come."

"Now science, in simpler form, is the study of what is and the possibility of what could be. It is formed around the idea of what already exists or what could exist and again, a hypothesis is drawn, a conclusion is devised and studies are founded on evidential results. At is at that moment, the two become one. Science and faith rely on the same ingredients in order to exist. Science and faith have the same purpose and goal: the repetitious study of one or more ideas, driven by the need to reach undeniable end results. Therefore, science is merely the explanation of faith. They are one in the
same. The science of faith is a religion and the faith of science is a practice of humanity."

So. Must science leave room for faith? Of course. One cannot exist without the other."

Revelation: a poem
020491
The force of Ra has been released containing the realms of energy the potion of humanity
The core of mother Earth expectorating the souls of hundreds of years
The enemy of M'Kaddesh awakens thrusting through the veins of nature
Hellacious blazes of rolling flame appear
Burning the spirits that range the sky
Aftermath gives birth to the new world
The light bearer comes forth
Beneath her feet is blood stained soil
The third eye wept tears of glistened lustrium
Dead seas bathed in blood. Desolate lands settled in infested pits
The sundial shadows the end of time
The eternal quest is fulfilled disturbing the restlessness
It has been done

The New Earth: Only 20 light years away

Found 20 light years away: the New Earth

Last updated at 19:20 26 April 2007

It's got the same climate as Earth, plus water and gravity. A newly discovered planet is the most stunning evidence that life - just like us - might be out there.
Above a calm, dark ocean, a huge, bloated red sun rises in the sky - a full ten times the size of our Sun as seen from Earth. Small waves lap at a sandy shore and on the beach, something stirs...

This is the scene - or may be the scene - on what is possibly the most extraordinary world to have been discovered by astronomers: the first truly Earth-like planet to have been found outside our Solar System.

The discovery was announced today by a team of European astronomers, using a telescope in La Silla in the Chilean Andes. If forced bookies to slash odds on the existence of alien beings.

The Earth-like planet that could be covered in oceans and may support life is 20.5 light years away, and has the right temperature to allow liquid water on its surface.

This remarkable discovery appears to confirm the suspicions of most astronomers that the universe is swarming with Earth-like worlds. We don't yet know much about this planet, but scientists believe that it may be the best candidate so far for supporting extraterrestrial life.

The new planet, which orbits a small, red star called Gliese 581, is about one-and-a-half times the diameter of the Earth. It probably has a substantial atmosphere and may be covered with large amounts of water - necessary for life to evolve - and, most importantly, temperatures are very similar to those on our world.

new earth

It is the first exoplanet (a planet orbiting a star other than our own Sun) that is anything like our Earth. Of the 220 or so exoplanets found to date, most have either been too big, made of gas rather than solid material, far too hot, or far too cold for life to survive.

"On the treasure map of the Universe, one would be tempted to mark this planet with an X," says Xavier Delfosse, one of the scientists who discovered the planet. "Because of its temperature and relative proximity, this planet will most probably be a very important target of the future space missions dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial life."

Gliese 581 is among the closest stars to us, just 20.5 light years away (about 120 trillion miles) in the constellation Libra. It is so dim it can be seen only with a good telescope. Because all planets are relatively so small and the light they give off so faint compared to their sun, finding exoplanets is extremely difficult unless they are huge.

Those that have so far been detected have mostly been massive, Jupiter-like balls of gas that almost certainly cannot be home to life. This new planet - known for the time being as Gliese 581c - is a midget in comparison, being about 12,000 miles across (Earth is a little under 8,000 pole-to-pole).
It has a mass five times that of Earth, probably made of the same sort of rock as makes up our world and with enough gravity to hold a substantial atmosphere.

Astrobiologists - scientists who study the possibility of alien life - refer to a climate known as the Goldilocks Zone, where it is not so cold that water freezes and not so hot that it boils, but where it can lie on the planet's surface as a liquid.

In our solar system, only one planet - Earth -lies in the Goldilocks Zone. Venus is far too hot and Mars is just too cold. This new planet lies bang in the middle of the zone, with average surface temperatures estimated to be between zero and 40c (32-102f). Lakes, rivers and even oceans are possible.
It is not clear what this planet is made of. If it is rock, like the Earth, then its surface may be land, or a combination of land and ocean.

Another possibility is that Gliese 581c was formed mostly from ice far from the star (ice is a very common substance in the Universe), and moved to the close orbit it inhabits today.
In which case its entire surface will have melted to form a giant, planet-wide ocean with no land, save perhaps a few rocky islands or icebergs.

The surface gravity is probably around twice that of the Earth and the atmosphere could be similar to ours. Although the new planet is in itself very Earth-like, its solar system is about as alien as could be imagined. The star at the centre - Gliese 581 - is small and dim, only about a third the size of our Sun and about 50 times cooler. The two other planets are huge, Neptune-sized worlds called Gliese 581b and d (there is no "a", to avoid confusion with the star itself).

Just because Gliese 581c is habitable does not mean that it is inhabited, but we do know its sun is an ancient star - in fact, it is one of the oldest stars in the galaxy, and extremely stable. If there is life, it has had many billions of years to evolve. This makes this planet a prime target in the search for life. According to Seth Shostak, of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute in California, the Gliese system is now a prime target for a radio search. 'We had actually looked at this system before but only for a few minutes. We heard nothing, but now we must look again.'

By 2020 at least one space telescope should be in orbit, with the capability of detecting signs of life on planets orbiting nearby stars. If oxygen or methane (tell-tale biological gases) are found in Gliese 581c's atmosphere, this would be good circumstantial evidence for life.

Dr Malcolm Fridlund, a European Space Agency scientist, said the discovery of Gliese 581c was "an important step" on the road to finding life. "If this is a rocky planet, it's very likely it will have liquid water on its surface, which means there may also be life." The real importance is not so much the discovery of this planet itself, but the fact that it shows that Earth-like planets are probably extremely common in the Universe. There are 200 billion stars in our galaxy alone and many astronomers believe most of these stars have planets.

The fact that almost as soon as we have built a telescope capable of detecting small, earth-like worlds, one turns up right on our cosmic doorstep, shows that statistically, there are probably billions of earths out there. As Seth Shostak says: "We've never found one close to being like the Earth until now. We are finding that Earth is not such an unusual puppy in the litter of planets."

But are these alien Earths home to life? No one knows. We don't understand how life began on our world, let alone how it could arise anywhere else. There may be an awful lot of bugs and bacteria out there, and only a few worlds with what we would recognise as plants and animals. Or, of course, there may be nothing. The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute uses radio telescopes to try to pick up messages sent by alien civilisations.

Interestingly, Gliese 581c is so close to the Earth that if its putative inhabitants only had our level of technology, they could - just about - pick up some of our radio signals, such as the most powerful military transmitters. Quite what would happen if we for our part did receive a signal is unclear.
"There is a protocol, buried away in the United Nations," says Dr Shostak. "The President would be told first, after the signal was confirmed by other observatories. But we couldn't keep such a discovery secret."

It may be some time before we detect any such signals, but it is just possible that today we are closer than ever to finding life in the stars.

William Hill said it had shortened the odds on proving the existence of extraterrestrial intelligence from 1,000-1 to 100-1. Spokesman Graham Sharpe said: "We would face a possible eight-figure payout if it were to be confirmed that intelligent life of extra-terrestrial origin exists. We felt we had to react to the news that an earth-like planet which could support intelligent life had been discovered - after all, we don't know for sure that intelligent extraterrestrial life has not already been discovered."
The new planet, so far unnamed, is 20.5 light years away and orbits a red dwarf star called Gliese 581.
