The Clock that told the Future

You have to love a clock that doesn't bother counting insignificant minutes and seconds. Built in 1410, Prague's Astronomical Clock tells time on a much grander scale. On the outer rings, you can see the hours tick by on a 24-hour scheme, but also "Bohemian Time"—a system that counted the hours since sunset. The inner mechanical components colorfully mark the sunrise, sunset, phases of the moon, position of the sun, and the zodiac, essentially painting a picture of the position of the earth within the universe as it was understood in medieval times. On the hour, the four animated figures around the dial—later additions—come to life: Death with his hourglass and bell, Vanity with his mirror, Greed waving a bag of gold, and a Turk. The last two (inadvertently) depict the 17th-century ethnic stereotypes and tensions that would haunt Central Europe in the future.

THE TURKS OF PRAGUE: THE MUNDANE AND THE SUBLIME

The Prague Orloj

This is a draft chapter, copyright I. Kalmar 2008. Do not quote in print or on the internet without the author’s permission. Asterisks (*) indicate places to be filled in or revised.
One of the major tourist attractions of Prague is the famous Orloj, a large astronomical clock whose origins are shrouded in mystery. The Orloj takes up two or three stories on the outside wall of the city’s old city hall. It has two clock faces, the one on top showing time (as well as astronomical models of the universe) and the one at the bottom the calendar. The upper clock face includes the figures of Vanity holding a mirror and of *, both of which wear a hat that has some elements recalling an Ottoman turban. There is also Avarice, represented before the post-World-War II renovation by the hooked-nosed figure of a Jew. Finally, there is a skeleton representing Death. Since an ingenious nineteenth century remodeling, every hour on the hour when the clock tolls, Death pulls on a string setting in motion a procession of Jesus’ disciples. He also makes Vanity, Avarice, and * shake their heads, deliberately rejecting the message about the limits of Time.

Clocks were a common “vanitas device.” Ordinary upright clocks used in private homes often featured a skull and the inscription, tempus fugit or “time is running (out).” The message was to oppose the eternity of Heaven to the fleeting character of earthly existence. The theme became extremely popular in the Renaissance. In the famous Ambassadors of Hans Holbein the Younger (1533, fig. *),1 the two men’s wealth may be considered an allegory of Avarice, the mirror of Vanity,* and the considerable girth of the men perhaps as Gluttony. But the focus here is not on these medieval categories of sin as much as on worldly pleasures and knowledge do not represent sin as much as the folly of relying on this world rather than the divine sphere beyond. Worldly pleasure is symbolized, as it would be frequently also in the next century, by music: here, a lute and pipes. Music, apart from being widely considered a particularly fleeting pleasure, helped to represent sensuality by invoking the sense of hearing. The carpets, like the rich garments, of the men stand for wealth and prestige, and they also bring in the sense of touch. The most important signs of worldliness, however, are those of scientific knowledge. One of the men holds a telescope; there are globes, scientific instruments and an open book. But although the two men are obviously competent in science, they are completely unaware of the foreshortened skull that flies by, as if in a different dimension, at the bottom of the scene. It reminds us but not them that neither worldly knowledge nor pleasure will save us at the Day of Judgment approaches, and are not worth much compared to Faith. That was and remains the standard interpretation of the opening verse of the biblical book of Ecclesiastes, which warns about all human endeavor being in vain: “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity,” vanitas vanitorum omnia vanita,2- hence “vanity painting,” “vanity device,” the name given to works with this message, including Prague’s astronomical clock.

Although the hourly parade of the figures on the Orloj’s upper clock face dates in its present form only to a nineteenth century renovation, it captures this spirit of stressing the limits of the world, which the much older clock has no doubt long represented. Clocks themselves were a worldly achievement of what we now call technology and science, and one of the greatest inventions of the secular scientific spirit. Here a magnificent clock is forced here to pay obeisance to religion and so proclaims its own limitations.

What concerns us here is not so much the more spectacular upper clock face, but the more modestly decorated bottom of the Orloj composition. Under the calendar face there are two statues of “Turks,” part of a set of figurines that was placed on it in the seventeenth century, most likely in 1659.3 Like one of Holbein’s Ambassadors, one of the Turks holds a telescope and is popularly known as The Astronomer. The other Turkholding a book, an item also found in the Holbein picture, and is popularly known as The Philosopher (fig. *).

4 Next to the Philosopher stands the imposing, over sized figure of an angel. The angel holds a drawn sword in one hand and in the other (hidden behind a shield decorated with a cross) a pointer aimed at the calendar. No doubt it is the Archangel Michael, the heavenly warrior whom Christian tradition expects to appear on Judgment Day to lead our souls to judgment. He points to the calendar to remind us that tempus fugit

Wisely, the nineteenth century designers of the upper face’s mechanical show did not make the Turks’ heads shake in denial along with those of Avarice, Vanity, and *. For the Turks’ failing is not that they willingly contradict the supremacy of God over human science and pleasure, but that they are ignorant of it. What the Orloj is saying to us is that worldly knowledge is really disguised ignorance if it is not coupled with religion. If you have worldly wisdom but not the Holy Faith then you might as well be a Turk.

A Turk? Classic Church doctrine has it that the gates of heaven remain closed to those who have not been baptized. Those who died before Christ cannot get in; even Abraham and Plato must languish in Purgatory. Muslim philosophers (philosophy then included science and medicine, as well as alchemy and astrology) were often classed with these righteous non-Christians, especially the Greeks whose knowledge they inherited and transmitted to the Christian world. In Rafael’s School of Athens the Arab savant Avicenna (****-****) is anachronously included with Plato and the rest; in Dante’s Purgatory, too, he lingers with Hebrews and Greeks. The Muslim scholars’ wisdom like the Greeks’ was pre-Christian, not in chronological terms but in terms of the logic of Christianity: it figured at the limits of worldly knowledge where Christians could enter with a higher Truth.

Science IS Religion? Yes.

Science and Religion

We all need to take a moment and step back and really examine why we choose to do what we do. We are all influenced in one way or another by our history, religion, science, culture and society we live in. The reality is science is the explanation of religion. On all points. The creator of the universe and everything in it is NOT a magician, but a scientist. Case in point: the mind and body advances through technological and medical sustenance. This same scientist also happens to be of a natural infinite energy, completely self-sustaining, which furthermore supports the fact the spirit that dwells within every human being needs the same amount, if not more, of nurturing development, attention and care.

In an effort to bring the two together, I had meetings with pastors and leaders of various churches as well as scientists of independent laboratories that specialized in everything from stem cell research to the cure for the common cold. Needless to say, neither side would agree with the other completely, leaving with exactly what we came in with; an agreement to disagree. But all is not lost. This is good. This means that both sides will continue to do as they always have and furthermore prove my point. They were both correct in believing that we as a species need both in order to be complete

You see, the ability to think, feel, create and innovate are all natural elements you are born with as religion explains. The outcome of the decisions, the responses to the feelings, the results of the creations and the benefits or consequences of the innovations are all natural elements of science. One cannot exist without the other. They are relative whether you choose to believe this or not. They are attached in design whether you choose to accept this or not. Religion is the concept: Science is the reality.

Existence and everything we have come to know about it, is proof that this statement is true. The idea of a planet that will support life started as an idea. Science made that idea a reality and here we are. Religion will continue to play an intricate role in our daily lives, no matter our personal position on any specific point such as god, devil, extraterrestrial biological entities or any other debatable topic we can find. Everyone from atheists to mainstream religious followers all have one thing in common: they exist! They exist as human beings, living completely by permission of each other in free will. We have the ability to collectively accomplish anything we set our minds to. Our literal "religion" - our set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of life, is only accomplished, achieved and realized through our literal "science" - our knowledge and understanding of the components of our natural world. So without a doubt and without contest, science is a religion for what its worth and the two will always coexist as a compliment to the other.

Just because you do not believe in something does not mean it does not exist. Every question has an answer. How you feel about the answer does not change the facts. For example: place a pencil under a piece of paper. The pencil becomes invisible. It does not mean the pencil does not exist. It simply means you cannot see it. Like the air we breathe-like the wind; it's there even though you can't see it. By choosing not to believe in air is not going to take it out of existence; just like choosing to believe the pencil is not under that piece of paper is not going to take that pencil out of existence. If the temperature gets cold enough, the air is revealed. The same as if you move that piece of paper, you will find the pencil is still there. Fact is fact; regardless of how you feel. You can say, I don't believe in pencils, but that pencil is still going to be there regardless.

Another example: I don't believe in paying taxes either, but that doesn't make the I.R.S. go away and poof them out of existence. Just because I don't believe in it, doesn't mean they're going to stop taking deductions out of my paycheck. In other words, even if you choose to believe or not believe; it does not matter to the factual reality, because that is the just the way it is.

Now to address the other side of this, you have free will. You have the ability to accept or deny any factual basis you encounter. In other words, you can choose to use that pencil and write on that paper or you can choose to use a pen or some other implement that you believe in. You can choose to pay your taxes or you can choose not to and put your money into something you believe in. It is your world coexisting with the real one you live in. One of the best lines I heard in a movie was from "Bruce Almighty" when Bruce asks God, "well can I ask 'why' and God says yes, you can! That's the beauty of it!" So for now, you may not agree with everything that was, is or is going to happen before, during or after you are gone from this life, but you are completely entitled to think, feel and respond in any way you choose during your stay here at the fabulous five star Hotel de' Existence.

TRUTHFUL PROGNOSTICS FROM EGYPT:
found in the library of Dr. Plein Horatio, Astronomer of  the Khedive of Egypt.
Is it superstition or fact?

Out of {42} days of the entire year are unfortunate days:
January - 1,2,6,11,17,18
February - 8,16,17
March - 1,12,13,15
April - 3,14,17,18
May - 8,10,17,30
June - 1,7,10
July - 1,5,6
August - 1,3,18,20
September - 15,18,30
October - 15,17
November - 1,7,11
December - 1,7,11
dat 2011

It is hereby noted:
1. If one is sick on one of these days mentioned, they will not easily recover.
2. A child born on such a day will not live long and if it lives, it will be poor health and vigor.
3. If persons marry on any of these days, they will be apt to separate and live in quarrel and poverty.
4. If a person commences a voyage on such a day, they will generally return home sick or met with an accident in body or goods.
5. During these mentioned forty-two days, five days are especially unlucky days.

DO NOT TRAVEL ON: MARCH 3, AUGUST 17, SEPTEMBER 1, 2, AND 30

One who sheds blood on April 1, August 1, December 1; will die within seven to eight days thereafter.

(Dr. Horatio explains why he believed based on his scientific data, these supernatural things would happen)

APRIL 1 - biblical Judas the traitor was born on this day.
AUGUST 1 - biblical Satan was rejected from Heaven on this day.
DECEMBER 1 - biblical Sodom "to" Gomorrah were destroyed.

(Now it is crucial for the sake of accuracy that we stop here and explain this largely misunderstood fact. While indeed Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed, it is imperative to mention it was not just those two cities caught in the crossfire of judgment. The cities of Admah, Zeboim and Zoar were also included. These five cities, also known as the "cities of the plain," were situated on the River Jordan plain in the southern region of the land of Canaan. The Jordan River plain has been compared to that of the Garden of Eden,[Gen.10:13] being a land well watered and green, suitable for grazing livestock. Divine judgment by Yahweh was then passed upon Sodom and Gomorrah along with two other neighboring cities that were completely consumed by fire and brimstone. Neighboring Zoar was the only township to be spared during that day of judgment.[Deut.29:23][Gen.10:19]

In Christianity and Islamic traditions, Sodom and Gomorrah have become synonymous with impenitent sin, and their fall with a proverbial manifestation of God's wrath.[Jude 1:7][1] Sodom and Gomorrah have also been used as metaphors for vice and homosexuality viewed as a deviation. The story has therefore given rise to words in several languages, including the English word "sodomy", used in so-called sodomy laws to mean basically any sexual act deemed unnatural.[2]

Whoever is born on any of these unhappy days will die of a violent death or will be disgraced before the world and seldom reaches old age.

Prophecy Fulfilled

The world has been riddled with wars and rumors of wars since the fall of humankind. Some were unexpected, others were predictable, none are forgettable. Theology, history, science and religion all agree there is a space and time for everything that happens. Then there is the mystical, the divine, the flip side of the coin the invites an ageless yet undeniable fact. The power of prophecy is real. But what good it is really? If you know the future, but do it anyway, did it really help that you were told what was going to happen? Does it really change anything if you are warned not to do something and do it anyway? The only true power in prophecy is to attempt to change the outcome. Now this ancient argument drums up debate favorites such as, fate vs. free will, coincidence vs. happenstance, and one of the really juicy ones, random evolution vs. controlled chaos. Either way you look at it, no matter what side you take or opinion you have, we as a being continue to repeat the same behavior over and over making us extremely predictable to the outside perspective.

These any many other points of view were taken into deep consideration by the historical prophets. But did not sway their drive to share their visions with anyone who would listen.

It was a sad and cold day in American history when yet another prophecy was fulfilled. The prophecy of Michel De Nostradame.

The Purple Cloak has fluttered in the wind creating a breeze of destruction o'er the nest of the Eagle. Thus the waking hour of the sleeping giant has come. This day of our Lord, the eleventh day of the month of September, in the year two-thousand and one, Anno Domini.

Now this is where it gets interesting. I had a prophecy of my own that came to pass. No, I'm no Nostradame, but I did have the opportunity to experience what it feels like to see deductive reasoning in the realm of absolute certainty. This was my prophecy revealed to me in a dream in early 2002.

Remember the words of the Prophet:
 1. "the bear and the eagle will rise to defeat the purple cloak."
(This is translated as "The United Kingdom will join military forces with the United States of America to defeat the Arab Nation.)
 2. "The Purple Cloak has begun to wave terror on the Bear."
(This speaks to the terrorist attacks in England.)

:MY PROPHECY:
In the year 2006, the silence will fall upon the land and mass destruction will be the result of the rebirth of hate. How, my God, does man inhabit the earth for over 12,000 years and still knows not the evil that dwells within? What will it take to make us stop killing ourselves? Please God, have mercy: forgive us. Amen.

:FULFILLED:
In March 2003 March, a coalition of countries led by the US and UK invaded Iraq to depose Saddam, controversially citing Saddam's weapons of mass destruction and terror links. Saddam's Baath party was disbanded and the nation transitioned to a democratic system. Captured on 13 December 2003, Saddam was brought to trial under the Iraqi interim government. On 5 November 2006, he was convicted of charges related to the 1982 killing of 148 Iraqi Shi'ites and was sentenced to death by hanging

Saddam was executed on 30 December 2006.

EMOTIONAL DEFICIENCY SYNDROME (??)

Can Angels Fall in Love?

Your questions answered by our angel expert

BY: William D. Webber

Aren’t angels and fairies the same thing? Don’t people in different places in the world just have different folk beliefs?

No, angels and fairies are not the same. Fairies are not real. The Wikipedia definition is “A fairy (also faery, faerie, fay, fae; euphemistically wee folk, good folk, people of peace, fair folk, etc.) is a type of mythological being or legendary creature, a form of spirit, often described as metaphysical, supernatural or preternatural.” They exist only in folklore, usually portrayed as wee, tiny things, where some are helpful, some are playful, and some are mischievous. They are not portrayed even in folklore as having access to God or acting on his behalf. Fairies are never mentioned in the Bible.

In contrast angels are found over 200 times in the Bible, always portrayed as real beings created directly by God. The heavenly hosts are spirit beings who are assigned by God to use their mighty power as they lovingly serve God, some on earth and many more in heaven

I believe that God sent Jesus to die for my sins but I can't stop dwelling on certain questions. Why did God create everything, angels, man, etc. knowing that we would sin and also knowing the outcome? What is the point of life if the final result is already determined? God knew that Satan would be His enemy and that we would have a hard time believing. It just seems so unfair. I pray for faith and trust in God but these questions flood my mind. Can you give advice?

-Danielle Caldwell

Danielle, your question is one of the most profound in the world, and theologians and philosophers through the ages have written volumes about the problem of good and evil. This column is too brief to offer a serious answer to your great question, so let me direct you to the article I have found to be most helpful and understandable on the Problem of Evil by Peter Kreeft, who teaches at Boston College.

Here’s the good news: you don’t need to know and understand why God created everything the way he did for you to find happiness and fulfillment. Recognize that the broken record that is playing over and over in your head is like a two-year-old’s tantrum. If you try to reason with it, then you only increase the hysteria. When these negative “why?” questions come, replace them by thinking of God’s love and grace, and pray to God to show you his favor.

Since angels are neither male nor female and cannot reproduce does that mean they cannot fall in love?

-Rio

Angels do love. They love God with a holy passion. Much of the love we see in this world has nothing to do with being able to reproduce; for example, the love of parents and children. Love does not end for married couples just because they have passed childbearing age. Angelic love, whether for fellow angels or for humans, is not romantic love but always a pure and holy love. This is the love we will experience in heaven. For more, see: “Would an angel human relationship ever work?"

I’m going to be 15. Will my guardian angel celebrate that we have been together for 15 years. Do angels celebrate their birthdays? Do they have birthday parties in heaven?

-Jennifer

Happy 15th birthday! Your guardian angel will be unseen but will be rejoicing with you as you celebrate your birthday. Angels were created by God, all at the same time, so they do not have individual birthdays. In fact, it would be more accurate to refer to their creation day, since they were created directly by God, not born. The concept of time is completely different for an eternal God and the angels than it is for humans. In heaven a thousand years is like a day, so the idea of a once a year celebration is a human concept not observed by angels.

The Heart is Three

A person can grow to be over a hundred years old, but their heart will always be that of an infant child. The heart only knows love, but is masked, tormented and abused by emotions of the mind such as hate, jealousy, anger, fear and rage. Yet and still the core of the heart only acknowledges pure love. This core is the seed of Unconditional Love. Unconditional love is possible if grown from the seed, deeply planted in the heart. To love unconditionally is to love yourself and others as God Loves You.

Can the natural human eye "really" see ghosts?

Human Magneto-reception and Paranormal or Etheric Perception

PARANORMAL
etheric-vision
There was a story about magneto-reception I found intriguing.  Magneto-reception is the ability to detect magnetic fields.  Many animals are believed to have this sense and use it for navigating the earth’s magnetic field.  For humanity, it seems like a lost ability.

A recent study in Nature Communications discussed a protein in the human eye that seemed to have magnetic sensing properties.  When this human protein was inserted into fruit flies, they became sensitive to magnetic fields and were able to detect them.

Here is the story:  Human eye protein senses Earth’s magnetism
I’ll offer some speculation.  Could human magneto-reception help explain paranormal perception?  There are countless stories of human beings seeing normally invisible spirits, ghosts, angels, and faeries.  Sometimes, rarely, someone will have a vision of something anomalous that appears very real. These visions have been regarded the result of an overactive imagination.

What would happen if, on occasion, our retina briefly perceived the electromagnetic world?  We might see a blurry image of light and try to make sense of it.  We might even call it a ghost.
A theory about ghosts and spirits suggest they interact with the physical world by manipulating electromagnetism.  It has been suggested much of paranormal activity could be explained by magnetic fields.  Cold spots in hauntings are said to be spirits drawing energy from the surroundings to manifest them.

Can we train to see invisible or magnetic fields?  There is an exercise anyone can use to develop etheric (electromagnetic?) sight.  In a darkened room, hold your fingertips as close together as possible without actually touching them.  Focus your body’s energy towards the tips of your fingers.  Then look at the fingertips indirectly, out of the corner of your eye using your peripheral vision. Slowly draw your fingers apart.

You might see a faint astral light, almost like smoke, streaming and swirling between the fingertips.  I have seen this myself.  Someone who suggested they had psychic abilities once demonstrated this to me. From the edge of my eye I saw something like a tiny, dimly lit vapor interacting between their fingertips. Was I experiencing magnetoreception?
