What's the story on Lilith, Adam's "first wife"?

straightdope.com

Dear Straight Dope:
What's this I hear every so often about Lillith, Adam's (as in adam and Eve) first wife?

We dunno what you've heard. You could have heard Lilith is a model for Oppressed Womanhood. You could have heard she's a succubus who gives men wet dreams. You could have heard that she's a demoness who murders babies. You could have heard that she's a goddess, the wife of Death.
On the one hand there are all these (and likely other) interpretations. On the other hand there are the legends themselves, which are also quite varied, from Jewish folklore. Let's start with a paraphrase of the most familiar legend, which dates to medieval times, from the controversial work known as the Alphabet of Ben Sirah, including a few of our own interjections:

When God created Adam, he was lonely, so God created Lilith from the same dust from which Adam was molded. But they quarrelled; Adam [the proverbial domineering male] wished to rule over Lilith. But Lilith [a militant feminist] was also proud and willful, claiming equality with Adam because she was created from the same dust. She left Adam and fled the Garden. God sent three angels in pursuit of Lilith. They caught her and ordered her to return to Adam. She refused, and said that she would henceforth weaken and kill little children, infants and babes. The angels overpowered her, and she promised that if the mother hung an amulet over the baby bearing the names of the three angels, she would stay away from that home. So they let her go, and God created Eve to be Adam's mate [created from Adam's rib, so that she couldn't claim equality]. And ever since, Lilith flies around the world, howling her hatred of mankind through the night, and vowing vengeance because of the shabby treatment she had received from Adam. She is also called "The Howling One." You can see how this legend could lead to various interpretations, depending on whether you think she is noble (in rebelling against male domination) or evil (in vowing vengeance against innocent babies.)

But where does this legend come from? The author of Ben Sirah basically wove together three separate threads from centuries earlier works, because Lilith is a very ancient legend.
Let's start with the Bible as primary source material. Genesis of course mentions Adam and Eve, but -- please note -- doesn't mention Lilith. The idea of Lilith as a "prior first woman" before Eve arises much later. The only reference to Lilith in the Bible (Old or New Testaments) is Isaiah 34:14, probably written around 540 BC; it's a description of desolation, jackals and ravens among nettles and briers, etc.: "Goat demons shall greet each other; there too the lilith will repose." Most of the other creatures referenced in this poetry cannot be positively identified. The KJV, following the Vulgate, translates "the lilith" as "the night demon," confusing the lili- with the Hebrew word for night. But presumably Isaiah meant some sort of demon.
The notion of a lilith as a demon is probably Assyrian (say around 700 BC), incorporated into Isaiah by way of the ancient Israelite contacts with the mythologies of Babylonia and Chaldea. The Assyrians had three female demons, Lilit, Lilu, and Ardat Lilit. There's little doubt that the Hebrew lilith-demon mentioned in Isaiah was a folkloric adaptation of the Assyrian demons.
Several hundred years after Isaiah, we find Talmudic writings that describe Lilith (now as a named demon, rather than a broad category) as an irresistibly seductive she-demon with long hair (presumably worn loose, a sure sign of wantonness) and wings. Terey wants us to be sure to say that she's a succubus. She seduces unwary men, then savagely kills the children she bears for them.
From this, she becomes the demon responsible for the death of babies. In ancient times, one needed to protect against such demons; today, we blame other factors for the death of infants. To guard against Lilith, superstitious Jews would hang four amulets, one on the wall of each room of a newborn babe, with the inscription "Lilith - abi!" ["Lilith - begone!"] which some think is the origin, much later, of the English word "lullaby." OK, that's legend one: a she-demon who kills babies.

Legend two: early rabbinic writings about Adam and Eve. There are rabbinic midrashim, stories filling in the gaps in the text, that tell of Adam and Eve after they leave the garden. Adam is angry with Eve for causing so much trouble, so he leaves her, and is beset by demons (called "lilith"; the name is still a generic category of demon). A particular lilith called Penzai seduces Adam and becomes pregnant. Got it? So that legend associates a lilith with Adam. Legend three: an early midrash that puzzles about why Eve is created from a rib of Adam, why not created equally with him? The midrash suggests the creation of a prior "first woman" (unnamed) who doesn't work out as a fitting companion for Adam. OK, so around a thousand years later (give or take a few centuries), the Alphabet of Ben Sira creates the story we started with, tying together all three legends, merging (1) Lilith the child-slaying night-demon story with (2) Penzai the lilith who seduces Adam with (3) the "prior first woman" story. This mingling of legends provided a good Jewish context for the ancient custom of making the Lilith amulets (thus exonerating the custom from the taint of superstition or witchcraft.) That's why the legend of Lilith as Adam's first wife doesn't emerge until medieval times, although the strands of the story are much earlier. The Zohar, the great book of Jewish mysticism from the 12th Century, adds yet another dimension. The Zohar generally doesn't mention Lilith by name, but refers to her as the wife of Samael, the Angel of Death ... and sometimes as the wife of Satan. She sleeps with men, causing wet dreams, and she collects semen from the marriage bed. (Flowing semen is a symbol of life, the white fluid, contrasted with flowing blood as a symbol of death, the red fluid, so the demoness who kills children collecting semen is symbolically very neat.)
So that's the legend(s) and their origin(s). A little confusing, but demonology is not an exact science.
Now, a brief footnote in Modern Times. You can imagine that modern feminists would latch on to the rabbinic story of punishment for resisting male domination, and use Lilith as a symbol. It's a two-edged symbol, of course, since Lilith as a demon who destroys newborns pre-dates the medieval explanation of Lilith as a rebellious wife. However, the modern use of Lilith as a symbol of oppressed womanhood remains quite strong and with every modern interpretation of ancient history, a new legend is born.

Rebuttal: Nibiru -- a Hoax?? Say it ain't so...

Nibiru is a Hoax

Recently, there have been a lot of false myths spread about a strange planet called Nibiru that comes through the solar system every 3600 years and causes major destruction, but these are just myths without any scientific evidence to back them up. Here are some of the false claims about Nibiru and explanations about why they're false:

  1. Nibiru is the size of Jupiter -- We have observed dwarf planets on the far edges of the solar system thousands of times smaller than Jupiter. If something as large as Jupiter was out there, it would be easily visible to amateur astronomers worldwide.
  2. Nibiru is bright like a second sun -- Do you see a second sun shining in the sky at night? No, neither do I.
  3. Nibiru will pass by us on December 21, 2012 -- In order for Nibiru to get to us in the next 4 years, it would have to be closer than the orbit of Saturn, making it easily visible in the sky.
  4. Nibiru can be seen at location 05:34:30,-02:10:13 in Microsoft's telescope program -- First take a look at Jupiter, that is the size and brightness of object you are looking for. Then go to those coordinates, and see what you think.
  5. The inhabitants of Nibiru are Gods that created humans on Earth
  6. Nibiru can't be seen right now because it's behind the Sun -- The Earth keeps moving around the Sun in our orbit. Anything that's behind the Sun now would be visible in a month. But the claims about Nibiru being hidden behind the Sun have continued for years. This also contradicts the coordinates given in item #4.
  7. You can only see Nibiru from certain places on Earth -- All objects in the southern sky are visible everywhere in the southern hemisphere of the Earth, and in part of the northern hemisphere as well. Similarly, all objects in the northern sky are visible everywhere in the northern hemisphere of the Earth, and in part of the southern hemisphere.
  8. NASA set up an observatory in Antarctica to track Nibiru -- Antarctica has the advantage of high altitude and dry air, but you can't see anything there that can't be seen in the rest of the southern hemisphere (see previous item) and Antarctica gets continuous sunlight from September through March, making an observatory completely unusable for half the year. Also, the coordinates given in item #4 are in the northern sky, not visible from Antarctica.

What is Nibiru really?

Nibiru is the ancient Akkadian name for the planet Jupiter.

What's in a name? The Dark Side

Question: Lucifer =Angel of Light?
o the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.  (Revelation 12: 9)
What other names does Satan have besides "The Devil"?
Here is a list of some of the other names for Satan in the Bible. Satan plays many roles and by knowing them it will give us a better understanding to his method of operation. The Scripture reference is not a complete list of every time these names are used, it is there to give you an example of how it is used in the Bible.
Name

Abaddon
Abaddon is the Greek form and Apollyon is the Hebrew equivalent. These words mean 'destroyer,' 'destruction.' This title stresses his work of destruction; he works to destroy the glory of God and God's purpose with man. He further works to destroy societies and mankind.
The Accuser of the Brethren
The Greek word for "accuser" is kathgor, which refers to one who brings condemning accusations against others. In view of Job 1 and 2, this is also an attempt to malign the character of God and His plan.
The Adversary
An opponent (in a lawsuit); specially, Satan (as the arch-enemy)
Angel of Light 2 Corinthians 11:14 One of his purposes is to make men as much like God as he can, but always without God. So, he will copy as much of God and His plan as he can, but he will always either distort, pervert, substitute or leave out those key ingredients of truth that are vital to the plan of salvation and sanctification through Christ
Apollyon
A destroyer (i.e. Satan)
Beelzebub
Three possible spellings of this word each have a different meaning: (1)Beelzebul means "lord of the dung," a name of reproach. (2) Beelzebub means "lord of the flies." Either one of these are names of reproach and are names of uncleanness applied to Satan, the prince of the demons and uncleanness. (3) Beelzeboul, means, "the lord of the dwelling." This would identify Satan as the god of demon possession. This spelling has the best manuscript evidence behind it.
Belial
This name means "worthless" or "hopeless ruin." The epitome of worthlessness, hopeless ruin and the source of all idolatry and religion which is also hopeless or futile.
the Devil
"Devil" is the Greek word diabollos which means "slanderer, defamer." This accentuates his goal and work to impugn the character of God.
Dragon
Probably from an alternate form of derkomai (to look); a fabulous kind of serpent (perhaps as supposed to fascinate) or the Greek word is drakon (as in draconian) and refers to a "hideous monster, a dragon, or large serpent." This word stresses the cruel, vicious, and blood thirsty character and power of Satan.
the Enemy
From a primary echtho (to hate); hateful (passively, odious, or actively, hostile); usually as a noun, an adversary (especially Satan)
the Evil One John 17:15; 1 John 5:9 The Greek poneros means "wicked, evil, bad, base, worthless, vicious, degenerate." It points to Satan's character as active and malignant.

Supernatural: Angels and Demons

Super Natural: Respect the Unseen
For every person with an opinion and a little imagination, the supernatural is something different. However, as I have explained before in earlier posts, truthfully, there are only two essential elements to existence: Physical and Spiritual: Natural and Supernatural. After careful review of so many approaches to the answers of such debatable topics, I decided to share some interesting insight from the most trusted source of literary evidence known to human kind: The Bible. Several verses in the Old and New Testament ring truth to the existence of angels and demons and clearly support the data I have provided on this site:
1. they are two different entities and
2. they have very distinct roles in human events; past, present and future.

What does the Bible say about angels?
Fact: Angels are created by GOD. There is no cross breeding between species: angel to human; human to animal and so on. Psalms 148:2,5

Fact: Angels do not marry and can not die. Mark 12:25, Luke 20:35-36

Fact: Guardian angels are REAL. There are angels that serve humans in life and in death. Hebrews 1:14; Jude 1:9; Matthew 18:10

Fact: Humans may exist in the flesh, but shall be reborn in the spirit and live as the angels do in Heaven: they will not marry and they will not die.

Fact: Angels can take on human appearance. Hebrews 13:2 makes it very clear that sometimes that stranger you meet in passing at the most oddest moment in your life is not an odd moment or stranger at all. It is an angel reaching out to you specifically to share a message with you - in the living flesh - right before your eyes.

Fact: Angels are NOT omnipresent - they can only be in one place at a time. Only GOD is omnipresent or omniscient.

Taking a moment to interject here, talk about someone or some "thing" reaching out to you, I have had a few experiences in my personal life where I was approached. It was gentle and warm. They were strangers. All of my encounters were with an older lady, sort of like a grandmother type. They all spoke of my trials and triumphs in a calm,  poignant manner; gave me advice on how to carry on and how not give up and to keep my faith and focus. Three times, I can remember, this has happened to me. If you think about it, you may recall a time when you were ''touched by an angel'' and didn't even realize ''what'' you were talking to. Let's continue.

Now for the flip side: Demons. Contrary to some beliefs, they are REAL. Very real, in fact, so real by the evidence of our living world that it is virtually insane to ignore them. They are just as real as you, me and the angels. And finally, Satan. Yes folks. Satan is very real. So let's look at the facts. What does the Bible say about Satan?

Fact: The Son of GOD was first. Yashayah was a part of infinite existence before the first angel in heaven was created. Satan is an angel - therefore Satan is a "created" being - and is forced to exist under the same laws of other angelic creation: can only be in one place at one time - can only take on the form of another - can only possess another - can only strongly influence another.

Ezekiel 28:12-18a; Isaiah 14:12-14

Fact: Satan was placed on Earth by GOD after being forced out of Heaven. This is the "Great Fall from Heaven" that you hear so much about in all cultures around the world. This is where is all fell apart. The Bible explains it pretty well. Satan rebelled out of pride and prejudice and chose to turn away from GOD and if he could not be treated as God in Heaven then he would make his way to be god on Earth.

Great. Look out humans, because here comes the bad news. Satan's mission: become Ruler of the Human World and teach us his ways of thinking and living. He became the world's first anti-god and the world's first anti-christ or anti-savior.

First John 5:19

Fact: Satan was there:
A. when the first humans were created
B. when the Son of God was born into Earth
C. when the Son of God was resurrected and ascended back into Heaven

1 Peter 5:8 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
(Deep breath!)

So there you have it. The key players. Angels and Satan. Now for the demons. What does the Bible say about demons? Last stretch, here we go.

Fact: Demons are angels. They are the 1/3 of heaven's angels that Satan took with him when he was forced out by GOD. This is the supernatural manifesto. Matthew 25:41; Revelation 12:4

Fact: Demons work for Satan: not Christ. They are among us, in the flesh and in human form and their main purpose is to carry out Satan's plans. 2 Corinthians 11:15

Isabelle Adjani: Possession
Fact: Possessions are REAL. This is a biblical fact that demons can and will possess humans at the will of Satan. Jesus Christ "cast them out". Jesus speaks of it in the New Testament and is seen first hand up close "casting out demons" in front of believers and non-believers alike. There were no special effects, fancy video cameras, no Photoshop or CGI, 2400 years ago. So the only thing left to think is: it really happened.

2 Corinthians 11:15, Luke 8:27, 2 Corinthians 12:7

Conclusion:
We all have free will, we are all vulnerable to mental and physical illness and that would scientifically explain everything. Almost. The belief system of good and bad is based on very common principles, morals and ideals. What you choose to practice in your life is based on your personal compass. For those that do believe that GOD is the creator of all these things and Christ and the angels work tirelessly to protect us from Satan and the demons, you can CELEBRATE! 1 John 4:4 wraps it up pretty well by saying, "You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

The Connection

The main connection between two entities is the mind. No matter what you call them or how you interpret them, dreams are gateways to the soul and we are all relatively vulnerable to internal and external influence on some level or another. It is only fitting that this is the best method of communication for a creation that does not have a physical, tangible body to move or speak with freely. Furthermore, intellect plays a large role here. To communicate, the speaker assumes the listener has the ability to decipher input with logic. In short, another form of being will not attempt to communicate with a human being unless it knows that it is able to get a response of some fashion; mental, physical, emotional or spiritual.

Contrary to modern belief, demons and aliens are NOT the same thing. A demon is shapeless, intangible, and is a being of pure energy. It does not have physical form. To argue that demons were not a creation of the same Creator that created humans is inane. All creatures born from another, made from the same Source, traced back to its origin, always leads to the same point of creation. Look at it this way. If you were born of your mother and father, your child born of you and your mate, their children born of them and their mate, for the offspring to claim your mother and father are not their great-great grandparents is both ridiculous and completely false. You are all family-you are all one in some way or another. Demons come from fallen Seraphs. Fallen Seraphs come from God.

An alien on the other hand, is literally by definition, a physical being that is not of this earth. You are an "earthling"- a tangible, physical being of this planet. The use of the word 'alien' is appropriate to describe another physical being that is a foreigner - an outsider - a visitor to your planet. Now as for the creation of their species, again you must follow the bloodline. One source of life for all things known and unknown. Countless number of galaxies that support life, spread so far apart from each other that one does not know or even realize the other exists. That same infinite being that created them, was created by the same God that created angels. So no matter how to slice it, all of you were originally created by the same Source.

The Power of Influence

Every ancient civilization, since humans have been able to record their thoughts, mention one common influence. Dreams. All historical research points back to great kings, queens, inventors, world leaders, and scholars being strong believers in a higher power. All of them believed there was an inspiration greater than themselves leading them to expand the limits of human capacity. We still believe this today. So it is confirmed that the power to dream means we have the power to bring concept into reality.  In Neftali's Locker, it was mentioned that the humans were made in "their" image. So the ability to dream is part of the natural human design. It is also the gateway to the "soul" or the "core of our very essence." The Mayans, Assyrians, Sumerians, Africans, and Asians collectively created entire nations.  All of which started with a dream.

It was in a dream they first heard the voice of knowledge. It was in a dream they saw the first vision of tomorrow. It was in a dream they first learned self-awareness. And it was in a dream-they were introduced to others not of their world - not of their kind. All cultures agree to some degree we are not alone in the universe. For nearly every famous name in human history: the first encounter with a non-human life form; started with a dream.
