NASA: The world is not ending on Dec. 21

by NASA
Posted on November 14, 2012 at 7:29 AM

Dec. 21, 2012, won't be the end of the world as we know, however, it will be another winter solstice.

Contrary to some of the common beliefs out there, the claims behind the end of the world quickly unravel when pinned down to the 2012 timeline.

Below, NASA Scientists answer several questions that are frequently asked regarding 2012.

Question (Q): Are there any threats to the Earth in 2012? Many Internet websites say the world will end in December 2012.

Answer (A):The world will not end in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.

Q: What is the origin of the prediction that the world will end in 2012?

A: The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012 and linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter solstice in 2012 -- hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012.

Q: Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012?

A: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 -- another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.

Q: Could planets align in a way that impacts Earth?

A: There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. One major alignment occurred in 1962, for example, and two others happened during 1982 and 2000. Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence.
Q: Is there a planet or brown dwarf called Nibiru or Planet X or Eris that is approaching the Earth and threatening our planet with widespread destruction?

A: Nibiru and other stories about wayward planets are an Internet hoax. There is no factual basis for these claims. If Nibiru or Planet X were real and headed for an encounter with the Earth in 2012, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye. Obviously, it does not exist. Eris is real, but it is a dwarf planet similar to Pluto that will remain in the outer solar system; the closest it can come to Earth is about 4 billion miles.

Q: What is the polar shift theory? Is it true that the Earth's crust does a 180-degree rotation around the core in a matter of days if not hours?

A: A reversal in the rotation of Earth is impossible. There are slow movements of the continents (for example Antarctica was near the equator hundreds of millions of years ago), but that is irrelevant to claims of reversal of the rotational poles. However, many of the disaster websites pull a bait-and-switch to fool people. They claim a relationship between the rotation and the magnetic polarity of Earth, which does change irregularly, with a magnetic reversal taking place every 400,000 years on average. As far as we know, such a magnetic reversal doesn’t cause any harm to life on Earth. Scientists believe a magnetic reversal is very unlikely to happen in the next few millennia.

Q: Is the Earth in danger of being hit by a meteor in 2012?

A: The Earth has always been subject to impacts by comets and asteroids, although big hits are very rare. The last big impact was 65 million years ago, and that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Today NASA astronomers are carrying out a survey called the Spaceguard Survey to find any large near-Earth asteroids long before they hit. We have already determined that there are no threatening asteroids as large as the one that killed the dinosaurs. All this work is done openly with the discoveries posted every day on the NASA Near-Earth Object Program Office website, so you can see for yourself that nothing is predicted to hit in 2012.

Q: How do NASA scientists feel about claims of the world ending in 2012?

A: For any claims of disaster or dramatic changes in 2012, where is the science? Where is the evidence? There is none, and for all the fictional assertions, whether they are made in books, movies, documentaries or over the Internet, we cannot change that simple fact. There is no credible evidence for any of the assertions made in support of unusual events taking place in December 2012.

Q: Is there a danger from giant solar storms predicted for 2012?

A: Solar activity has a regular cycle, with peaks approximately every 11 years. Near these activity peaks, solar flares can cause some interruption of satellite communications, although engineers are learning how to build electronics that are protected against most solar storms. But there is no special risk associated with 2012. The next solar maximum will occur in the 2012-2014 time frame and is predicted to be an average solar cycle, no different than previous cycles throughout history.

What's the story on Lilith, Adam's "first wife"?

straightdope.com

Dear Straight Dope:
What's this I hear every so often about Lillith, Adam's (as in adam and Eve) first wife?

We dunno what you've heard. You could have heard Lilith is a model for Oppressed Womanhood. You could have heard she's a succubus who gives men wet dreams. You could have heard that she's a demoness who murders babies. You could have heard that she's a goddess, the wife of Death.
On the one hand there are all these (and likely other) interpretations. On the other hand there are the legends themselves, which are also quite varied, from Jewish folklore. Let's start with a paraphrase of the most familiar legend, which dates to medieval times, from the controversial work known as the Alphabet of Ben Sirah, including a few of our own interjections:

When God created Adam, he was lonely, so God created Lilith from the same dust from which Adam was molded. But they quarrelled; Adam [the proverbial domineering male] wished to rule over Lilith. But Lilith [a militant feminist] was also proud and willful, claiming equality with Adam because she was created from the same dust. She left Adam and fled the Garden. God sent three angels in pursuit of Lilith. They caught her and ordered her to return to Adam. She refused, and said that she would henceforth weaken and kill little children, infants and babes. The angels overpowered her, and she promised that if the mother hung an amulet over the baby bearing the names of the three angels, she would stay away from that home. So they let her go, and God created Eve to be Adam's mate [created from Adam's rib, so that she couldn't claim equality]. And ever since, Lilith flies around the world, howling her hatred of mankind through the night, and vowing vengeance because of the shabby treatment she had received from Adam. She is also called "The Howling One." You can see how this legend could lead to various interpretations, depending on whether you think she is noble (in rebelling against male domination) or evil (in vowing vengeance against innocent babies.)

But where does this legend come from? The author of Ben Sirah basically wove together three separate threads from centuries earlier works, because Lilith is a very ancient legend.
Let's start with the Bible as primary source material. Genesis of course mentions Adam and Eve, but -- please note -- doesn't mention Lilith. The idea of Lilith as a "prior first woman" before Eve arises much later. The only reference to Lilith in the Bible (Old or New Testaments) is Isaiah 34:14, probably written around 540 BC; it's a description of desolation, jackals and ravens among nettles and briers, etc.: "Goat demons shall greet each other; there too the lilith will repose." Most of the other creatures referenced in this poetry cannot be positively identified. The KJV, following the Vulgate, translates "the lilith" as "the night demon," confusing the lili- with the Hebrew word for night. But presumably Isaiah meant some sort of demon.
The notion of a lilith as a demon is probably Assyrian (say around 700 BC), incorporated into Isaiah by way of the ancient Israelite contacts with the mythologies of Babylonia and Chaldea. The Assyrians had three female demons, Lilit, Lilu, and Ardat Lilit. There's little doubt that the Hebrew lilith-demon mentioned in Isaiah was a folkloric adaptation of the Assyrian demons.
Several hundred years after Isaiah, we find Talmudic writings that describe Lilith (now as a named demon, rather than a broad category) as an irresistibly seductive she-demon with long hair (presumably worn loose, a sure sign of wantonness) and wings. Terey wants us to be sure to say that she's a succubus. She seduces unwary men, then savagely kills the children she bears for them.
From this, she becomes the demon responsible for the death of babies. In ancient times, one needed to protect against such demons; today, we blame other factors for the death of infants. To guard against Lilith, superstitious Jews would hang four amulets, one on the wall of each room of a newborn babe, with the inscription "Lilith - abi!" ["Lilith - begone!"] which some think is the origin, much later, of the English word "lullaby." OK, that's legend one: a she-demon who kills babies.

Legend two: early rabbinic writings about Adam and Eve. There are rabbinic midrashim, stories filling in the gaps in the text, that tell of Adam and Eve after they leave the garden. Adam is angry with Eve for causing so much trouble, so he leaves her, and is beset by demons (called "lilith"; the name is still a generic category of demon). A particular lilith called Penzai seduces Adam and becomes pregnant. Got it? So that legend associates a lilith with Adam. Legend three: an early midrash that puzzles about why Eve is created from a rib of Adam, why not created equally with him? The midrash suggests the creation of a prior "first woman" (unnamed) who doesn't work out as a fitting companion for Adam. OK, so around a thousand years later (give or take a few centuries), the Alphabet of Ben Sira creates the story we started with, tying together all three legends, merging (1) Lilith the child-slaying night-demon story with (2) Penzai the lilith who seduces Adam with (3) the "prior first woman" story. This mingling of legends provided a good Jewish context for the ancient custom of making the Lilith amulets (thus exonerating the custom from the taint of superstition or witchcraft.) That's why the legend of Lilith as Adam's first wife doesn't emerge until medieval times, although the strands of the story are much earlier. The Zohar, the great book of Jewish mysticism from the 12th Century, adds yet another dimension. The Zohar generally doesn't mention Lilith by name, but refers to her as the wife of Samael, the Angel of Death ... and sometimes as the wife of Satan. She sleeps with men, causing wet dreams, and she collects semen from the marriage bed. (Flowing semen is a symbol of life, the white fluid, contrasted with flowing blood as a symbol of death, the red fluid, so the demoness who kills children collecting semen is symbolically very neat.)
So that's the legend(s) and their origin(s). A little confusing, but demonology is not an exact science.
Now, a brief footnote in Modern Times. You can imagine that modern feminists would latch on to the rabbinic story of punishment for resisting male domination, and use Lilith as a symbol. It's a two-edged symbol, of course, since Lilith as a demon who destroys newborns pre-dates the medieval explanation of Lilith as a rebellious wife. However, the modern use of Lilith as a symbol of oppressed womanhood remains quite strong and with every modern interpretation of ancient history, a new legend is born.

Dreams for the Dead?

I journal this dream only because I'm reaching out to my fellow readers and bloggers for feedback. I recently had a dream that I was F. Scott Fitzgerald and somehow, without any knowledge of his life, I found myself in his home in days after his death.  The dream went like this:

Francis Scott Key-Fitzgerald
"...ah, the art of dream weaving. always an entertaining venture. today, i was privileged to walk on the time line of F. Scott Fitzgerald. it all started in an lavish apt home. there are many rooms. upper-middle class 40's style furnishings, books, TV sets, phones, desks, chairs, clothing, etc. tons of clothes were piled up in the bathrooms ridiculously. tossed about and dirty. no children were present. there were men in dark suits and hats, some with glasses and cigarettes, all hurrying about and walking around tending to things and moving things out of the house. there was a woman, young, blonde, astute in stature, holding onto her composure in the midst of what appeared to be an hour of drama or familiar chaos..."
Sheila Graham
"...moving from room to room, there were noticeable images of a home unkempt; dirty counter surfaces, bathrooms were filthy and disgusting and sinks were unclean; the toilet paper was soiled with human waste. the front room was fairly kept up and the den was okay but then we get into the library and there were a couple of dirty black plastic ashtrays, the TV was left on and the books were shelved, but dusty and unread for quite some time. then it hit. there was something to find here. without hesitation, i started searching through the piles of clothes, going through pockets of shirts and pants. i tried cleaning a bit as i went along as the filth was sore on the eyes and nose. i didn't find anything in the bathroom adjacent to the library so i sifted through a couple of his black leather wallets that were sitting on the small sofa near the TV and they were both empty. i tried looking in a couple more suit jackets and scanned the bookshelves but nothing was found. so i exited the the library and headed back up front to the main room. the fair woman was sitting at a small desk by the far wall that heads into the kitchen and the men in the black suits did not speak to me but made short eye contact as i walked out the door and woke up..."
1443 N. Hayworth Ave., West Hollywood: the apartment house where author F. Scott Fitzgerald died in 1940. He actually lived nearby at 1403 North Laurel Ave., but when he began suffering heart problems (shortly before his death), he was unable to climb the stairs to his second-floor apartment, so he moved into this first-floor apartment of his lover, Sheila Graham. He was working on "The Last Tycoon" when he died here.
Now after waking up, I pondered the dream and wondered what it was all about. The name, F Scott Fitzgerald came to mind. I have never read any of his literature, including Great Gatsby. I got online later that day and researched him. I found that he had an apt in CA, 1st floor, nice size, but his health was bad and he couldn't get to the 2nd floor where he stayed. It all started to click. The location was the CA Apt. the woman was Sheila Graham. The spirit-F. Scott Fitzgerald, himself. What was he looking for? He died 12/21/40 and it was 2/9/40; two months after his death. Their old home in shambles...he can't find what he's looking for in his old wallets or clothes. Whatever it was, it wasn't there. He straightened up the chairs and walked out and I woke up.
Fellow dream writers and readers...any idea what a dream like this could mean? Post a comment!

Suicide: Death In A Dream

"Oh look...ah, here we go. He left a note at least."
"Good grief, the body stinks!"
"Have the crew come up and clean this up, will ya?"

"You done here, Detective?"
"Yeah, for now. Let's see here...they say dead people don't talk. But this guy's got a lot to say..."

Date of death: March 6, 2004

There he was. He was in the doll's house. Dancing side to side, shuffling his feet and waving his arms and hands. Her hair was frizzy, dirty blonde, torn, and stringy. Her skin was a cold, broken plastic-stiff with age and bitter with despair. His clothes were worn and thin. Exposing the gritty aftertaste of his sorrows dried over crusted wounds. The eyes were stuck open with injurious stare-glazed by depression and dilated with lost passion. Nylon thread forced eyebrows into a shape of anger and surprise.

Without warning, I walked into the dollhouse to the second floor--center bedroom. The room was gray and cold with only the light from the broken ceiling fan above. It was a thick distance between us. My large nature against the small-framed doll gave me a sense of godliness and therefore, encouraged my control. He stopped dancing side to side in a panic and without shifting expression in his cutting eyes, opened his rotted mouth wide with a maniacal grin. Nothing could stop the radiating hate from shooting through me from her soul. I pushed with all I could muster in my sub-conscious state and forced movement of my body toward him. With ever-changing motion, fast to slow, I raised my
arms, torn and bleeding from blades of years repressed. He screamed and tried to fight me from taking hold of the stiff, plastic arms. The stream of his voice screamed over me as I continued to struggle for control. I managed to take hold of him and move him from the upstairs center room to the far right living room where the fireplace burned brightly.
We argued with our emotions and wrestled with our fears. Hate and tears kept score and refereed the fights. I managed to win him over but her taste, I could not swallow. The halls of self-love were cold and damp and the bell tower of human dignity was hollow. I forced him into a vicious shift in environment from nowhere to worse-a rusty, mustard-yellow, button padded room, no light, no windows, no doors. He struggled and fought to break free from my grasp and shouted obscenities of truth. Each word blocked a major artery to my heart and slowly choked me still. He begged and begged
and the louder he became, the softer his words fell into the air. I paused before fading into the darkness because out of the senseless shouting, I heard reason. I asked her, what do you want from me? She simply dropped her arms, lowered his head, closed her eyes, cried and said, "free me. Please. Set me free."

The Scribe of Dream Weaver Diaries

With a little perseverance and the Internet, I was able to use public records searches and social sites to track down the scribe. That's right! In March of 2007, I found the writer, alive and well, living in Oregon. After exchanging emails and phone calls, he agreed to meet and of course, as you can see, this site was created as a result of our collaboration and friendship.

With all of our pictures together, I was only able to post this one of him sitting on the stairs. He didn't want his picture posted in fear of what people would think and because of what the writings did to him physically. I confirmed all the names, places and events in his writings were real. I asked him, why me? Did he know that I would just happen to stumble upon his materials, take such a deep interest and eventually meet him? He said, yes, that he had been waiting for me, that Nethaleo told him that we would meet and that all of this would happen.

I figured with the original author in my friendship, the rest of the journal would blossom like a fresh flower on a sunny day. Wishful thinking. It only became more complex. We worked as a team and spent long hours talking about his life and his visions. He explained that Nethaleo is De'Maitre's guardian angel. But over time, De'Maitre believed he was the guardian angel; that he had powers and special abilities. This was a delusion. And when there were times when he could channel his guardian angel to help him with a great crisis in his life, he didn't follow the instructions, so things did not turn out the way he expected.

Now, psychologically speaking, any one who has long term exposure to cults, paranormal activities or perverted religion and mysticism, can become extremely vulnerable to their influences.
The effects include paranoia, illusions, nightmares, excessive use of fowl language, violent tendencies and withdrawal family and friends. It is a form of addiction

The writer explained that while scribing the journals, he experienced random, angry outbursts. He said he was at work one day when he got into an argument with his manager over a shipment order. He said he jumped out of his truck, said he would turn them to dust and his wings were stronger than any man-made object and then he jumped up on the top of the trailer, yelling and flapping his arms, ran and tried to jump off of it and fly. He landed face first onto the pavement and loading rail, resulting in his disfigured face.
In 2005, he was moved to the Lane County Psychiatric Hospital in Eugene, Oregon. His treatment went well, he was released and moved into his own apartment. That's where I met him in 2007. I remember he said regardless of what modern psychiatry and religion said, he believed that the "powers" being told to him for Nethaleo, were his. He believed he was Nethaleo. He believed he was a human-angel. As a friend and a Christian, I do not argue or judge him. I did as he asked me to do. I put up this site. Your story will be told my friend and the knowledge will be passed on.

Rebuttal: Nibiru -- a Hoax?? Say it ain't so...

Nibiru is a Hoax

Recently, there have been a lot of false myths spread about a strange planet called Nibiru that comes through the solar system every 3600 years and causes major destruction, but these are just myths without any scientific evidence to back them up. Here are some of the false claims about Nibiru and explanations about why they're false:

  1. Nibiru is the size of Jupiter -- We have observed dwarf planets on the far edges of the solar system thousands of times smaller than Jupiter. If something as large as Jupiter was out there, it would be easily visible to amateur astronomers worldwide.
  2. Nibiru is bright like a second sun -- Do you see a second sun shining in the sky at night? No, neither do I.
  3. Nibiru will pass by us on December 21, 2012 -- In order for Nibiru to get to us in the next 4 years, it would have to be closer than the orbit of Saturn, making it easily visible in the sky.
  4. Nibiru can be seen at location 05:34:30,-02:10:13 in Microsoft's telescope program -- First take a look at Jupiter, that is the size and brightness of object you are looking for. Then go to those coordinates, and see what you think.
  5. The inhabitants of Nibiru are Gods that created humans on Earth
  6. Nibiru can't be seen right now because it's behind the Sun -- The Earth keeps moving around the Sun in our orbit. Anything that's behind the Sun now would be visible in a month. But the claims about Nibiru being hidden behind the Sun have continued for years. This also contradicts the coordinates given in item #4.
  7. You can only see Nibiru from certain places on Earth -- All objects in the southern sky are visible everywhere in the southern hemisphere of the Earth, and in part of the northern hemisphere as well. Similarly, all objects in the northern sky are visible everywhere in the northern hemisphere of the Earth, and in part of the southern hemisphere.
  8. NASA set up an observatory in Antarctica to track Nibiru -- Antarctica has the advantage of high altitude and dry air, but you can't see anything there that can't be seen in the rest of the southern hemisphere (see previous item) and Antarctica gets continuous sunlight from September through March, making an observatory completely unusable for half the year. Also, the coordinates given in item #4 are in the northern sky, not visible from Antarctica.

What is Nibiru really?

Nibiru is the ancient Akkadian name for the planet Jupiter.

Perspective

Derek Speed wrote: (2008)

Man will destroy this planet long before any "death star" will. Pay attention,  firstly it has been proven in a Supreme Court in the United States that there is no such thing as intelligent design by "god". Secondly, it will be the philosophies of religion that destroy the earth. Two thousand years ago, someone named Moses wrote what's called the Ten Commandments, one of those Commandments was "Thou Shalt not Kill". That philosophy makes human life, more valuable than the planet that sustains it. According to experts, there was 1 billion people on this planet two thousand years ago. If no humans killed any humans for the last two thousand years like the bible suggest, what would the current human population of this planet be right now? Keep in mind, the human population has doubled in the last forty years from 3 billion to 6 billion. Take out a pencil and piece of paper, now draw a circle, with another circle around the outside of the circle you just drew. Make it look like a cell and a nucleus. Now think of how a virus works, a virus or parasite like the Ebola Virus. If one of these parasites invade one of our cells, it will do nothing but consume and reproduce, just like the human animal in the "thou shalt not kill" world. Think of planet earth as a cell in our bodies, the earth is the atom and the ozone is the nucleus that protects it. The human animal does nothing but consume and reproduce, because we are not permitted to kill or conflict with each other, it's against "gods" law.
What happens to a cell when its totally consumed by a virus or a parasite, well, it dies. We the human race in the "thou shalt not kill" world will kill our cell or planet. I want you to think of those four words uttered 2 thousand years ago, and then go pick up a dictionary and look up the word Ironic. Why is everything round, bubbles, the earth, the atom, our cells, even our orbit, well it's simple really, the circle is the most efficient shape, the circle of life doesn't start at ocean plankton and end at the lion. We, the human race walk this planet with infinite complacency, convinced of our superiority over it, that way of thinking is going to get us all killed.
